About Friends of Rabbits

We get a lot of questions about the kind of veggies that are safe for bunnies, so here's a list. Remember that if vegetables aren't already a part of your bunnies' diet, to introduce them slowly over a period of weeks. Bunnies have very sensitive digestive systems and don't tolerate sudden changes in their diet very well.

We recommend a balanced diet consisting of three different types of vegetables, and unlimited Timothy hay. A good measure is a cup of vegetables for a 5lb rabbit.

We do not recommend pellets, but if your rabbits are used to them, and you want to keep them in the diet, we suggest Timothy hay-based pellets that are also low in calcium content. Keep in mind that some rabbits are allergic to the traditional alfa-alfa hay pellets which are, after all, made for breeder rabbits, and may contain such stuff as molasses. The allergy will typically express itself in the form of diarrhea.

The Oxbow Hay Co. makes a Timothy hay based pellet especially for bunnies, called Bunny Basics/T, you can order it from them by emailing them at, or you can check out the company's homepage at

Note: Veggies that bunnies may enjoy, but are high in calcium and should be given sparingly are marked with an asterisk (*).
